Local Sports

Washington DC has a thriving major league sports establishment, with top-flight teams like the Washington Nationals (baseball - this team plays at Nationals Park, only 5 minutes away by car, and about 10 on foot), Washington Wizards (basketball),Washington Redskins (football), Washington Capitals (hockey), DC United (soccer), and Washington Mystics (women's basketball), making this city one of the few to have a full slate of major sports teams. Less well known are the Washington Kastles (team tennis), Baltimore-Washington Eagles (Australian rules football), and Washington Slayers (rugby). There are also eight colleges in the District with sports programs.

Sports you can join include the Marine Corps Marathon, held in fall, the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon, held in spring, and the National Cherry Blossom 10 Miler and Army 10 Miler. There are also many local sports leagues.

Hunting in Maryland:
There is no hunting in Washington DC, but very nearby Maryland has good hunting under the regulation of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources which lists big game for that state, including black bear, deer, and turkey, and small game including pheasant, quail, rabbit, hard, and grouse, and migratory game birds including Canada goose, doves, duck, rail, teal, snipe, and woodcock. Furbearers include beaver, coyote, gray and red fox, mink, muskrat, nutria, raccoon, and skunk.

Fishing in Maryland:
The Maryland Department of Natural Resources lists American eel, trout, bass, carp, catfish, pike, and yellow perch as inland stream or lake fish, and blue crab for crabbers. There are a few areas and seasons with unlicensed fishing - see the state website for details.
