Much of the District of Columbia is a walkable and bikeable city, with readily available mass transit. Some areas have a high crime rate; be aware of your surroundings. The Metro and bus system can generally get riders where they are going, close to anywhere in the city, and into the suburbs. Washington DC is at the southern end of the BosWash Northeast megalopolis urban corridor, and connected to Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and the rest of the urban Northeast by road and Amtrak rail (Acela makes the route fast).

Fort Dupont Park
, about 5 miles away from base, offers a wooded green zone in DC, including miles of hiking and walking trails, a historic tour of grounds once used to defend DC from Confederate invasion, and a year-round ice rink. There are also some wild animals in the park, including turkeys, hawks, and red and grey foxes.

There are several other parks, mostly on what was once the grounds of forts emplaced to defend DC. Today, they make up an interconnecting series of parkland, suitable for walks, picnics, and casual sports. Washington DC has one of the highest percentage of parklands of any US city. Parks near the Navy Yard include Yards Park (walkable to the west on the Anacostia River Trail), a nearby section of Anacostia Park (walkable east on the Anacostia River Trail), and Virginia Ave Park (north of the Yard; this is also the location of the Virginia Ave Park Community Garden).
